Vigilante Crypt, Page 21

Finally!  The last page of book 1!  I’m pretty darned happy with it, too.  Anthony did a great job with putting just the right lettering in just the right place (as usual), for which I’m grateful, and the artwork turned out.  Don’t get me wrong, there are times when I have everything planned out in advance and laid out….this just wasn’t one of those times.  Seems like I start out trying to draw one picture, but there’s another picture in it’s place that won’t have any part of my plans.)

To celebrate this achievement, I plan on having a cold, Nosferatu beer (local micro-brew), and later, carving the Ghost Zero logo into a pumpkin.  If it turns out, I’ll post a picture.)

Have a great night, everyone!

Publishing News….

Hey, Gang!  I just got word from Joe Gentile from Moonstone books that instead of having to wait until March to see the new GZ short “The Cast-Iron Coffin”, you’ll only have to wait 4 weeks!  Ghost Zero will be appearing in Moonstone’s PHANTOM #26 AND in Buckaroo Banzi: Prequel #2, both of which will be out in about a month.  So, it’s going to make this Christmas a bit more Merry for me….and incentive to kick out a new GZ short soon!  I’ll try to keep you posted on this as I hear more.

ALSO, I spoke with (fellow Kentuckian) Bill Nichols, Editor of SKETCH Magazine, and I am slated to have a tutorial article on rendering comic pages with markers in issue #39…which just happens to be the ADAM HUGHES ISSUE!  I really admire Adam’s art, so it’s a big thrill to be a part of the magazine.  So, if you’re interested in the process I use to make the art for GHOST ZERO and want some great Adam Huges art to boot (uh…or maybe the other way around? ;) ) then keep an eye out for SKETCH #39!

Stay tuned!

Tiny Tribute!

Guys, I got this fantastic little guy from artist Blue Beacon over at the Deviantart site.  I have to say that it’s probably the…..cutest….interpretation of GZ that I’ve ever seen!  I was a slacker for not getting this up immediately when Blue sent it my way (that publishing thing again), but I did want to show off just how cool this little guy was.

Thanks, Blue!

Vigilante Crypt, Page 20

So…it looks like Charles doesn’t even bother keeping his skeletons in a closet!  And poor Eddie….I’ll bet he’ll think plenty of times in the future, “If only I hadn’t said ‘I will’ on page 20!”

I’m dying to tell you other little things about this page and this scene….even trivial stuff that probably wouldn’t matter….but, if I tell you know, I won’t work it into the story later.  So, I’ll have to wait.

Tomorrow, I start work on the FINAL PAGE OF BOOK 1!  That means it will be finished right in time to celebrate Halloween…my favorite holiday!  Huzzah!!  Hmm….maybe this calls for something special that I can share with you guys?  Maybe a special give-away of some sort?  Let me think about that!

So, enjoy…and stay tuned for the last (and very cool) page of book1 of: THE VIGILANTE CRYPT!

Back to work!

Hey Gang!

Well, I spent a week away from home for the dayjob, followed by a weekend at the Perryville, Kentucky Civil War reenactment (the only reenactment in the country that actually happens on the original battlefield), and though it was productive and fun, I was glad to sit down yesterday night to work on the next Vigilante Crypt page.  I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems like the pages are taking longer to turn out.  Maybe I’m being a bit too critical of the images, but I really fought with the last page (page 19) forever before being “satisfied”…….satisfied being a relative term, because the art never seems to finish up as nicely as it starts!)  Ah, well…live and learn, eh?

Although it’s been over 80 degrees lately, we are in fact only a couple of weeks away from my favorite holiday…Halloween!  Happily for me, it looks like the first issue of the Vigilante Crypt will be finished right on the week of Halloween, which gives me a giddy little chill.)  When the first issue is done, I plan to work on a short or two for the Moonstone books, and I’m brainstorming about them right now.  You know, it’s interesting that I never really imagined that GZ would spend so much of his time fighting ghosts….that there would be more human-centered vengence going on, but…dangit….ghosts are so fun to come up with!!  I’m considering doing a vicious take on the classic “hitchhiking ghost” story, and if so, we should be getting our first look at…..Charles’ car!  I’ve got a model of it sitting on my shelf above my study/studio/workstation, and it would be lots of fun to draw.  We’ll see if any other ideas come in the next couple of weeks.  For those of you who are fans of the “Fleshless Legion” short, I have plans for them as well…..

So, sit tight folks!  The next (to last) page should be up early next week!

Vigilante Crypt, page 19

Page 19!  That leaves me with only a couple of pages left in this “book” of the Vigilante Crypt arc.  I have to be honest, for some reason, this page just was NOT cooperating.  It took forever to get the drawing done..I just couldn’t seem to decide on how things should lay out.  I must have changed that top panel alone 8 times!  Ah, well.  At least it’s here!

It’s interesting to see old Charles in his heyday, eh?  I was pretty pleased with how that last panel turned out.  I wanted to go for something that was “quintessential pulp” with it, and I think it came through ok.  Of course, for it to be 100% pulp, there HAD to be a woman in distress, so there you have it.  Who is she?  Why is she made up like a mummy?  Who’s mummy is she??  Heh.  She was fun to draw, at any rate.

So, what’s this about Charles saying that the ring gives a measure of control over ghosts?  You’ll also notice that Charles never really refers to himself as a ghost, but he does say the ring is a fetter for him.  Is he dodging the question?  Oh, Charles…”what a twisted web we weave when we practice to deceive…”  This page is actually Eddie’s last chance to run screaming and to live a normal life!  Wave him off, folks!  Eddie!  Run for it!!

But then, kids never listen, do they?)

A special thanks goes out to Anthony Schiavino, who took time out on HIS BIRTHDAY to letter this page!  Happy Birthday, buddy!  Hope those bloodstains come out soon!!  (he knows what I mean)

October should finish this chapter of the Vigilante Crypt, and then I’ll start on another short story to appear in the Moonstone SPIDER books!  This week I’ll be out of town a bit for work, so keep your fingers crossed that progress gets made!

Ghost Zero at Moonstone

Yay!  It’s official!!  Ghost Zero has found a home at Chicago’s Moonstone Books.  Moonstone publishes several pulp-themed heroes already, such as the Phantom, the Avenger, Domino Lady, Kolchak, the SPIDER and more, so I’m very happy with the “fit” that I think GZ will have there.

And it gets better.)

GZ will be appearing in the March release of Moonstone’s SPIDER novellas!  The GZ story that will be appearing in this book will be the “Cast-Iron Coffin” short that you’ve been reading about earlier in the blog.  Now, the SPIDER is my all-time favorite pulp hero, so I’m pretty flattered to have GZ “catching a ride” with such a great tribute to the character.  You’ll be seeing a new GZ short in each of the SPIDER books coming out from Moonstone every other month, which means I’m going to be a pretty busy guy.  I still plan on making headway with the “Vigilante Crypt” storyline as well, so fear not, that story will continue!

Speaking of the “Vigilante Crypt”, here is an image from the upcoming page……a tease of Charles back when he was still alive!  Gasp!!

So, stay tuned folks!  Me?  I’mma go celebrate!)

Vigilante Crypt, Page 18!

Charles sure seems to be that “take charge” kind of guy, doesn’t he?  I feel for poor, shellshocked Eddie.  This is a time in his life that he’ll probably wish he could have done differently.  But….where’s the fun in that, right?)

I had a week vacation here in Kentucky and really had a blast.  We saw the Perryville Civil War battle site, the Abbey at Gethsemani, the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill and lots more.  Here’s a picture I took at Pleasant Hill:

Beautiful place.

So…what’s going on with the publisher, eh Dave?  Well, apparently I’m learning the lesson that when you deal with publishers, wheels turn slowly.  Although I’ve approved and signed a contract with the publisher, I have yet to get my signed copy of the form, so no official announcements.  I’ve also been contacted by a couple more publishers who are interested in GZ….but it’s not fair to start out with someone just to switch ships before it leaves port.  It is kind of boggling that just by doing the story and putting it out there that it gets such positive interest.  Well, it’s boggling to me, anyway.)

So, we’re getting close to wrapping up the first issue of the “Escape from the Vigilante Crypt!” arc!  Yahoo!  The best is yet to come, I promise!

Francesco Francavilla loves Ghost Zero!

I know that you’ve heard me extoll the virtues of artist and pulp-hearted friend Francesco Francavilla’s Pulp Sunday blog before, so imagine how thrilled I was to have the artist behind Zorro and The Black Coat honor Ghost Zero with his own chilling rendition of the character?

Quoting Francesco:

“Can’t really say much, but I was lucky enoughto get a sneak preview to a short tale featuring Ghost Zero and I have to say that everything I saw was screaming authentic PULP adventure: the ingredients were all there and to boot we have also wonderful visuals and great retro feel on lettering and sfx: Dave did it right, no doubt about it :)”

If you’re a die-hard pulp fan (and I know you are), make sure you run over to the Pulp Sunday blog and his official art site!

A hearty thanks from this greatful fan, Francesco!

Vigilante Crypt, Page 17!

Yep folks, we’re back working on the Vigilante Crypt storyline!  Now we’ll finally learn what the heck happens to Eddie!  It seems like forever (actually, a little over a month) since I’d worked on this strip, having taken time off to work on the (now finished) short story “Cast-Iron Coffin”, so it was nice to get back into the story.  Trust me, this is just the beginning of a wild ride!  The only frustrating thing (to me and probably to you) is that I just can’t get work done faster!  Since I’m only able to turn out a page of art a week, short stories are a bit more satisfying to tell, but longer stories give much more depth.  Ah well, it’s only time, right?  The plan with this story is to tell it in it’s entirety on the web, and then offer a print version for sale with “added scenes” that weren’t present online!  Should be fun!

If you need catching up, or a refresh on what’s been going on so far, you can check out the story up-to-date here: http://ghostzero.com/escape-from-the-vigilante-crypt/

In other news, I’m currently holding in my hand a publishing contract!  I’m working out the last final details, but as soon as it’s signed, I promise a “tell-all” story of what’s been going on!

Enjoy the new page!
