“Cast-Iron Coffin” artwork in progress

null

Hey, folks!  Just wanted to share some of the artwork for the short story I was working on for the publisher.  This is the first panel of the short and serves as kind of the “cover” for the story, so there’s lots of blank space that will be filled by lettering.  It’s also a first for me in drawing water and submarines.)

I’ve got to say that the one thing that bugs me (and has been pointed out by others) is that the woman’s face isn’t quite right.  I may see if there is something I can do with shading to help, but I may have to re-draw the face and photoshop it in.  I’m resistant to doing that unless it just can’t be helped, but I think it warrants the effort since this panel is so important.

Other than that, I like the scene (well, I may work a bit more on the dark hills in the distance.

It’s great to be working again!

-Dave

Thanks, Eric! I need to send you another email update, don’t I?)
Actually, I’m going to *try* to letter this short myself. I’ve been buying books and reading every forum I can about it, and I’ve been pouring through 1940’s issues of “Adventures into the Unknowns” that I can get my hands on to get some inspiration.
You can bet I’ll be sweating bullets as I try to letter the thing. I figure I’ve got to please Anthony or he’ll beat me!)
    (and I’ll deserve it!)

Yeah Dave, the way that woman’s head is turned is one of the TOUGHEST angles to draw a head from. It’s tough because you’re basically looking at the jawline and the bottom of the nose straight on, which means there shouldn’t really be any lines around the edges of them. But you HAVE to have lines around them, because you have to convey that they’re there. It’s a paradox, and I usually end up drawing a head at that angle like six times. You’ve got it especially tough, because it’s a beautiful woman, and if she’s off by even a little, it’s going to look doubly wrong.

Good luck! I recommend looking through an Alex Toth or Dave Stevens book and trying to find a similar pose.

Got the book in the mail today. Thanks! I’ll drop you a line soon.

END…yeah Dave is going to stretch his legs on this one and tackle the lettering himself. We’re still working on Vigilante Crypt together, etc.. But this one is all Dave.
